Cthylla microfasciculumque is a kind of protist within the Parabasalia . It lives as an endosymbiont in the intestines of the termite species Reticulitermes virginicus, nativeto Cuba . It is the only known species of the genus Cthylla .

The species and genus described in 2012 were named after the fictional being Cthylla from the novel The Transition Of Titus Crow by Brian Lumley , who described her as the youngest daughter of Cthulhu in the Cthulhu myth by HP Lovecraft .

features

Cthulhu macrofasciculumque and Cthylla microfasciculumque

Cthylla microfasciculumque is a unicellular living being. It is a small flagellate with a length of 10 to 15 μm and a width of 6 to 10 μm and a single cell nucleus at the front end, which is attached to a pronounced axostyle . This runs through the entire cell and ends in a pointed part at the rear end of the cell. At the front end there is also a bundle of 5 flagella that move synchronously and alternately curl up forwards to form a firm bundle and then flip backwards and thereby break up into individual flagella.

Way of life

Cthylla microfasciculumque lives as an endosymbiont and part of the intestinal flora in the intestine of the termite species Reticulitermes virginicus . The cells move through the alternating curling up and subsequent flapping of the flagella bundle at the front end of the cell.

Systematics

The genus Cthylla and the species Cthylla microfasciculumque contained therein was described by Erick R. James and Patrick J. Keeling in 2012 together with the likewise new species Cthulhu macrofasciculumque . Both species were assigned to the Parabasalia , with the closest relatives also living in termites.

The genus was named after the fictional being Cthylla from the novel The Transition Of Titus Crow by Brian Lumley , who described her as the youngest daughter of Cthulhu in the Cthulhu myth by HP Lovecraft and as a winged cephalopod. The scientists gave the species its name because it is a smaller relative of Cthulhu. The species name, however, refers to the small bundle of flagella of the species (macrofasciculumque from “micro” and “fasciculumque”).
