Cuautitlán is a city in the Mexican state of México and the capital of the municipality of Cuautitlán . It is part of the Zona Metropolitana del Valle de México . The name of the city comes from the Náhuatl language and means "between the trees".

The city is not to be confused with the nearby Cuautitlán Izcalli .

history

Cuautitlán began as a Chichimec village around the 14th century. It was ruled by Tlacopan before it was conquered by the Mexica and became part of the Aztec Empire. After the Spanish conquest, Cuautitlán was evangelized by the Franciscans . They built the monastery of San Buenaventura and founded the brotherhood of the Purísima Concepción de Nuestra Señora de Cuautitlán. Saint Juan Diego (1474–1548) is said to have lived there with his wife Maria Lucia until their death in 1529. They lived there in a one-room mud house that was covered with stalks of grain. The house is still in good condition. Cuautitlán received city status in 1968.
