history

The municipality of Cuautitlán Izcalli was founded in the 1970s and was largely created from Cuautitlán de Romero Rubio (now simply "Cuautitlán"). Originally planned as the first self-sufficient city in the neighborhood of Mexico City, the design of the city was based on European and American cities and included an industrial, a residential and several green areas. However, after the 1985 Mexico City earthquake, the plans failed due to a large influx of people looking for areas such as Cuautitlán Izcalli that were not at risk of earthquakes.

Today, a large chunk of the community's residents work in nearby towns, satellite cities, and Mexico City , causing huge congestion on the only available freeway.

economy

The US automaker Ford operates a plant in the city. Also Bacardi has a production facility in the city.
