The Cucurbitella are a genus of unicellular , wired amoeba and belong to the family of Difflugiidae . The genus contains thirteen species that live in water bodies.

features

The housing of the representatives of the Cucurbitella is uniformly egg-shaped and dark gray to opaque in color, it consists of small to medium-sized mineral particles, these are so dense that the organic cement underneath is hardly visible. A wreath is clearly visible around the mouth opening, the opening itself has 3 to 12 lobes made up of small mineral particles. The inner mouth opening is a circular or lobed opening in an intermediate wall that is on the same level as the actual housing wall.

The cell nucleus is of the vesicular type, i.e. it contains only one nucleus . The cytoplasm of some species contains zoochlorella .

Occurrence

Cucurbitella are herbivores, they are found on freshwater plants and in sediments.

Systematics
