Joseph Smith receives the gold plates from the angel Moroni

As Cumorah is a small hill near Palmyra ( Wayne County ) in the western part of the State of New York , United States of America, respectively. This name was given to the mound by members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in a place mentioned in the Book of Mormon .

According to Mormon belief, the prophet Moroni hid the gold plates there with the records of the Nephite and Jaredite peoples . Mormons believe that in 1827 Joseph Smith was directed to this hill by the risen Moroni to collect these plates and translate some of them into English. That translation is the Book of Mormon. In the historical context of the Book of Mormon, the name of the hill in which Moroni hid the gold plates around 420 AD is not mentioned.

A visitor center and memorial for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has been established on the hill .

The Hill Cumorah Festival is held here every summer .

The Book of Mormon describes a "hill cumorah" in a land of abundant water and explicitly mentions it as the repository of other records from the above peoples. It is also reported that almost all of the Nephites in the Cumorah area perished in a mighty battle.

For a long time, Latter-day Saints Church of Jesus Christ believed that the place in New York State where Joseph Smith claimed to have received the gold plates was Cumorah, mentioned in the Book of Mormon. However, recent research has shown that based on the statements in the Book of Mormon itself and the lack of archaeological evidence for a great, ancient battle, this cannot be true.

Further attempts to locate the Cumorah hill mentioned in the Book of Mormon lead to Central America. This theory names the hill el Cerro Vigía ( Sierra de los Tuxtlas ) near Veracruz , the Kaminaljuyú region (near Guatemala City ) and Teotihuacan (near Mexico City ).
