Cuno Winkler

Cuno G. Winkler (born September 30, 1919 in Königsberg ; † December 26, 2003 ) was a German nuclear medicine doctor and university professor. He is considered the nestor of nuclear medicine in Germany.

Life

Winkler's study of medicine was interrupted several times by the Second World War; he did not graduate until after 1945. In 1948 he started working as an assistant doctor with Eduard Borchers at the Luisen Hospital in Aachen . It was here in 1948 that he carried out the first radioiodine therapy for metastatic thyroid carcinoma in Europe. In 1951 he set up a nuclear medicine department at the University Hospital Bonn and in 1972 he received a call to the newly established chair for nuclear medicine and became director of the "Institute for Clinical and Experimental Nuclear Medicine". In 1985 he retired .

Act

Winkler has had a major impact on nuclear medicine in Germany. In his publications he mainly published studies on the diagnosis and treatment of thyroid diseases and tumors. In the 1960s, Winkler introduced electronic data processing to nuclear medicine and thus created the basis for digital sequence scintigraphy and emission computer tomography (see single-photon emission computer tomography and positron emission tomography ). In 1973 Winkler co-founded the first regional specialist society for nuclear medicine in Germany, the "Rheinisch-Westfälische Gesellschaft für Nuklearmedizin" (RWGN) and is considered to be the pioneer for the introduction of the field designation " Specialist for Nuclear Medicine" in 1976.

Honors

Winkler received the Federal Cross of Merit, honorary membership of the RWGN, the badge of honor of the German Red Cross and an honorary doctorate from the University of Santo Tomas in Manila .

The German Society for Nuclear Medicine (DGN) awards the Cuno Winkler Prize for scientific work that "relates to findings or possible applications for radioactive isotopes in medicine".
