Cupula
Cupula ( Latin for "small barrel") denotes:
- in anatomy:
- a gelatinous mass on the sensory hairs of the semicircular canals of mammals, see balance organ
- likewise the enveloping gelatinous dome of the neuromast of the fish, see lateral line organ
- as the cupula pleurae the pleural dome
- in some arthropods ; Swimming beetles , sticky and rounded surfaces on the tarsus (foot) (tarsomer; limb)
- a short, broad and smooth or hairy, concave structure, a antenna segment in front of the antennae lobe , in some water beetles , long-button water beetles and humpback water beetles , it is part of a mechanism here to maintain an air bubble
- in botany:
- generally a cup-like structure
- the coating of the fruits of the beech family, see fruit cups
- in various plant families such as the Lauraceae , Magnoliaceae , Winteraceae and Calycanthaceae , a cupula also refers to the bowl of the oil container of oil cells
- in the extinct seed ferns , such as B. Lyginopteridales and Caytoniales , the cup-shaped structure that envelops the ovules
- in archeology:
- a prehistoric or ancient artifact, a bowl-like depression in solid rock or concrete, about the origin and use of which different views are expressed
