Curley Money

Curley Money (born March 20, 1925 in Halesburg , Alabama , as Robert Earnest Money , † December 23, 2003 in Columbus , Georgia ) was an American rockabilly and country musician and guitarist .

Life

Childhood and youth

Curley Moneys birth year is controversial. In addition to 1925, some sources also give 1923 as the year of his birth. Money was the youngest of six children, and soon after two of his brothers started playing an instrument, he got a guitar too . Young Money dreamed of a career as a country musician.

Career

As a young man, Money moved to Columbus, Georgia. The year is also controversial here; According to Collin Escott , he left Halesburg in 1942, and according to Adam Komorowski the first eight years later. It is clear, however, that Money founded his own band, the Rhythm Ramblers , in Columbus and appeared with them on the WGBA program and later had his own TV show on WRBL-TV. In addition to him, Money's nephew Comer was also a member of the group, who was supposed to record for his uncle's labels in the 1960s. The Rhythm Ramblers toured the United States as well.

In 1956 Money founded his first record label, Rambler Records, on which his first single Playing The Game was released in April of the same year . The song (as was the B-side) was pure country; in September 1956, Money made recordings in the Sun Records studio in Memphis , Tennessee . His only known track there was Chain Gang Charlie , a hillbilly boogie that went unpublished. While Money continued to record country boogie pieces for his own label, he visited Sun Studios several times over the next few years. In 1958 the single The Frog / A Little Blue Bird Told Me appeared on the sub-label Suns Phillips International , in which Lee Mitchell can be heard as a singer and Money is only a background musician with a band. He continued to record on his two labels Rambler and Money Country and Rockabilly until the mid-1960s.

In the 1970s, Money played several records for Gold Standard Records in Nashville . During the entire time he worked as a radio host for WHYD in Columbus, where Money stayed until his death. In 1985 Bison Bop released an LP with twelve of his songs.
