Curt Groeper

Curt Gröper (* 1916 in Mansfeld , † 1985 in Duisburg ) was a German painter.

biography

Curt Gröper was born in Mansfeld am Harz in 1916 and grew up in Duisburg-Hamborn. After the war he studied from 1946 to 1950 at what was then the State Art School in Hamburg , now the HfbK. His teachers were Willem Grimm and Alfred Mahlau . Seafaring has been his dream since childhood. All his life he went to sea alongside his work as a freelance artist, hired as a boatman on cargo ships. His painter friend was Heinz Peter (1924–1993), with whom he also exhibited together.

He died in Duisburg in 1985.

Gröper created an abundance of works on paper and canvas, the themes of which were strongly influenced by his life at sea: ships, harbor bars, “light girls”, city views. His estate is managed in trust by the Galerie Blankenese in Hamburg, where they were friends with him and still know him personally.
