Heinz Peter (born August 26, 1924 in Rögnitz , † 1993 in Hamburg ) was a German lithographer , etcher , draftsman and painter .

Life

Heinz Peter was born on August 26, 1924 in Rögnitz near Hagenow / Schwerin in Mecklenburg . The mother was Polish, the father French. Therefore, in addition to the signatures “Heinz Peter” and “Heinz Peter Rögnitz”, “Pierre” as the French version of the first name and “de Mesnil” as the family name of the ancestors appear in the artist's captions. Peter grew up in Hamburg in the area around Heidenkampsweg in simple circumstances, sometimes with foster parents.

In 1939 he began an apprenticeship as a technical draftsman in the aircraft construction department of the Hamburg shipyard Blohm & Voss . His training included working as a draftsman in the aircraft construction office and knowledge of practical work in the aircraft construction factories. Under the influence of a communist colleague at work, Peter began to gather information through specialist reading and developed a critical political stance. After completing his apprenticeship, he was taken on as a technical draftsman by Blohm & Voss . In January 1943 he was called up for military service and deployed in repairs to the war defense in Magdeburg and in the Waldviertel near Vienna. Despite his attitude critical of the regime, he saw the Second World War unscathed.

After three months in prison, Peter returned to Hamburg in August 1945, where his parents had also survived. In the Landeskunstschule am Lerchenfeld , which later became the College of Fine Arts , he initially helped to prepare the rooms for teaching. In the winter semester 1945/46 he began his studies there in the painting class with Willem Grimm , and Peter also attended the painting classes with Erich Hartmann and Alfred Mahlau .

Due to the tradition of the Hamburg Secession conveyed by the teachers, the artists at the State Art School in the post-war years mainly dealt with the representation of the human figure, which also determined Heinz Peter's work. During this time the artist Brandes created a portrait bust of Heinz Peter.

Heinz Peters' works are characterized by a critical political attitude (as a young man, due to the influence of colleagues and literature, he tended towards ideal communism and pacifism) and an interest in the representation of people and their space of experience. Specifically, he took up political issues in the graphic arts; In painting, it is city images, portraits and still lifes, often with the memento-mori motif of the skull, that determine his work. His late work includes the New York Impressions from the early 1990s .

A large part of the printmaking is now owned by the Altona Museum . Heinz Peters had several solo exhibitions in Hamburg and Berlin.

reception

"Heinz Peter (...) enjoyed special payments (at the state art school), as it were, as he was considered the undisputed 'super genius' of the school. Compact in physique and equipped at the time with a strong attitude towards life and self-confidence, he amazed with his large, colorful and bold-looking designs à la Picasso. As the only painter trainee at the art school, he was invited to take part in an exhibition at the Hamburg Secession, which cemented his early fame as well as the great personal sympathy that Maria May (...) showed him. At that time, Heinz Peter hardly took part in class life, but despite the cornucopia of appreciation that was poured out on him, he was not particularly arrogant and in no way hurtful. "
