Erich Hartmann (painter)

Erich Hartmann (* 7. January 1886 in Elberfeld ; † 23. September 1974 on Sylt ) was a German painter and graphic artist of Expressionism .

Life

Erich Hartmann studied painting under Eduard Gebhardt at the Düsseldorf Art Academy from 1903 to 1906 and at the Hermann Groeber Art School in Munich from 1906 to 1908 . From 1908 to 1912 he attended the Munich Art Academy . Here he learned the art of etching from Peter Halm , who mainly taught graphic arts.

On a trip to Paris, he was inspired by the Impressionist art scene there . The first graphics were created during a summer vacation in Hamburg in 1909. He was able to sell a number of the sheets through his father's bookstore.

In 1912 he went to Paris for two years. In 1914 he was drafted into the military. In 1917 he married Ida Jenichen. In 1918 he was wounded and was taken to a hospital in Altona . He stayed in Hamburg for the next few decades.

In 1919 Erich Hartmann joined the newly founded artists' association Hamburgische Sezession . There he was now considered the most important representative of the Expressionists. In 1920 he joined the Hamburg Art Association .

From 1922 to 1944 Hartmann taught at the private art school Gerda Koppel . His colleagues included Eduard Bargheer and Friedrich Ahlers-Hestermann .

In 1924 he went on a three-month study trip to Italy, where he was mainly influenced by the works of Giotto . His style changed closer to objectivity and new objectivity . In 1925 he joined the Altona artists' association .

Hamburg's chief building director Fritz Schumacher gave him the first order to design a monumental mural in 1926, which was followed by a series of similar orders. Nine of these works were removed and confiscated by the National Socialists from the Hamburger Kunsthalle and one from Stettin in 1937 as so-called “ degenerate art ” . The last of the annual exhibitions of the Hamburg Secession was closed by NSDAP cultural officials in April 1933. After the artists' association had also received an emphatic request to separate from its Jewish members, it dissolved in May 1933 following a unanimous decision.

From then on, Hartmann partially adapted to the Nazis' taste in art. He got new orders for murals and was allowed to exhibit his works. After the end of the war in 1945 he became a member of the newly founded Secession again and from 1946 to 1953 he was employed as head of the painting class at the State Art School in Hamburg. In 1956 he received the Edwin Scharff Prize , combined with an honorary pension.

In his later works, Erich Hartmann liked to deal with literary and mythological topics. Hartmann was a member of the German Association of Artists . He died on Sylt in 1974.
