Curtis Dawkins is an American author .
Life
Curtis Dawkins grew up in Louisville, Illinois . In 2000, he completed a Masters in Creative Writing from Western Michigan University . In 2004, Dawkins killed another man under the influence of drugs in an alleged robbery and was sentenced to life imprisonment without parole . He later stated that he had been addicted to alcohol and drugs for several years . He has three children with his former partner, Kimberly Knutsen. Knutsen teaches English literature at Concordia University in Portland .

In July 2017, Scribner published his first book, a collection of short stories under the title The Graybar Hotel . The stories are about unnamed prison inmates in the Lakeland Correctional Facility in Michigan and have strong autobiographical traits. When it was published, the story volume was featured on the front page of the New York Times and sparked controversy. The German translation of The Graybar Hotel was published by Suhrkamp Verlag in spring 2018 .
