The Cuyamaca Mountains or Cuyamacas are a mountain range in San Diego County , California . The mountain range extends roughly from the northwest to the southeast. The highest peaks are the Cuyamaca Peak ( 1985 m ) and the Stonewall Peak ( 1700 m ).
Both the San Diego River and the Sweetwater River have their source in the Cuyamacas .
The mountain range includes the Cleveland National Forest and Cuyamaca Rancho State Park .
When gold was discovered in the Cuyamacas in 1870 , a gold rush began , particularly in the Julian area .
