Cyclophora albiocellaria is a butterfly ( moth ) from the family of the tensioner (Geometridae).
features
butterfly
The wingspan of the moths of the first generation is 20 to 25 millimeters; the second generation is slightly smaller and measures 18 millimeters. The apex of the forewings is slightly pointed. The basic color varies from yellow to orange to yellow-brown. In some specimens, the middle shadow can be slightly dusty reddish. The inner and outer transverse lines are made up of dark rows of dots. The central shadow is broad and blackish jagged. The hind wings resemble the forewings in their drawing elements. All wings show clear, round, white seeded eye spots.
Caterpillar
The color of the caterpillars varies from green-yellow to velvet brown. They are tinted reddish at the front and rear end and also show a dark back line. There are broad, dark slashes on the middle segments.
Doll
The doll is light yellow. It is characterized by two rows of dark dorsal points and black veined, dark wing sheaths.
Similar species
- Cyclophora lennigiaria differs in the weaker middle shadow and the expression of the eye spots, which are smaller and oval in shape. C. lennigiaria was previously considered a subspecies of C. albiocellaria . The independence of the two species is still controversial today, although many authors acknowledge this. Further research will be carried out for final clarification. There is also a difference in the choice of forage plants: C. albiocellaria lives on field maple ( Acer campestre ), C. lennigiaria on the other hand on French maple ( Acer monspessulanum ).
- Cyclophora ariadne shows an overall lighter appearance. The apex of the forewings is less pointed and more rounded. Since the species is also endemic to Crete , there is no geographical overlap with C. albiocellaria .
Geographical distribution and occurrence
The distribution of the species extends from southeast Europe to the Urals . Local populations live in Hautes-Alpes . There are also deposits from Turkey over the Caucasus to the Central Asian mountains. In the Southern Alps it can still be found at an altitude of 1,300 meters. It prefers to live in barren deciduous forests as well as on sunny mountain slopes, provided that the food plant of the caterpillars occurs there.
Way of life
The species forms two generations a year. The moths fly from late April to early June and then again from mid-July to mid-September. They are crepuscular and nocturnal and also visit artificial light sources . The caterpillars feed on the leaves of the field maple ( Acer campestre ). The pupa hibernates.
