The Cyclophoridae , also known as tower snails , are a family of land-living snails from the order of the Architaenioglossa ( Caenogastropoda ). The family is now considered to be limited; the representatives of the family are limited to the tropics and subtropics of the Old and New World.
features
The right-hand wound cases are usually small and rarely medium-sized. The housing shape varies from disk-shaped to highly conical. The mostly round mouth is modified in many ways, sometimes with an incision or a constriction; the last turn can fall sharply off the turn plane. There is a mostly circular operculum that can be retracted deep into the housing. It is tightly wound in a spiral and can be calcified or uncalcified. There may be accessory deposits on the outside of the operculum.
The head ends in a short trunk or snout. The antennae are round in cross-section, relatively long and taper slightly towards the end. The eyes sit on flat papillae at the base of the antennae. The creep sole is not divided lengthways. The mantle cavity acts as a lung cavity. The radula has seven elements per transverse row. The middle plate usually has five, more rarely three or seven teeth. The animals are of separate sex.
Geographical distribution and habitat
The family is very species-rich, the species occur almost worldwide in warm climates.
Systematics
So far there has been no comprehensive revision of the family. The processing status of many categories is very poor. The list of subfamilies and genera is therefore uncertain.
