Cydonia is an Italian power and thrash metal band from Florence that was formed in 1999.

history

The band was formed in 1999 and consisted of singer Dan Keying, drummer Mat Stancioiu, guitarist Steve Sguario, bassist Trevor O'Neal and keyboardist Lee Crow. Keying had previously received an offer to join Labyrinth because the previous singer Fabio Lione had switched to Rhapsody of Fire , which he turned down because he and Olaf Thorsen had different ideas about the future of Labyrinth. Nevertheless, with Thorsen on second guitar and Stancioiu could be heard on the debut album. Thorsen also produced the album. In 2001 the self-titled debut album was released. The science fiction album deals with the mythological of the planet Mars . In early 2003 Pete Daniels joined the line-up as a permanent second guitarist and Stefan Ray as the new drummer, before the group recorded their second album, The Dark Flower . The album was released in 2003 and, like its predecessor, on Metal Blade Records .

style

According to Michael Edele from laut.de , the band plays on The Dark Flower Power Metal with Thrash Metal riffs and slightly progressive features. The group was still very similar to groups like Rhapsody of Fire and Labyrinth on its predecessor and has now moved away from them with the addition of Bay Area Thrash Metal influences. In the Metal-Hammer interview, Dan Keying stated that he is often compared to Michael Kiske and that Helloween is one of the band's influences. The songs would be written on the basis of the vocal lines and only afterwards do you write the riffs. Andreas Schöwe from Metal Hammer made comparisons with groups like Gamma Ray , Helloween and Labyrinth in his review of the debut album . Occasionally there are slightly progressive moves like in Angra . There are also Dio- like, ballad-like features. According to Matthias Mineur from Metal Hammer , the Thrash Metal influences on The Dark Flower have increased significantly. In the intros and verses, the band is usually fast and aggressive, while the choruses are often melodious.
