Cymbella is a genus of diatoms (Bacillariophyta) with around 17 species that occur mainly in freshwater.

features

The representatives are single-celled, elongated diatoms. The individual cells have the typical diatom shell consisting of two counters. The bowl is rectangular when viewed from the side, and asymmetrical when viewed from the bowl: one side is strongly convexly curved, the other only slightly or completely straight. Only rarely are both sides equally curved. The cells have a large, H-shaped plastid with pyrenoid , which is colored golden brown by fucoxanthin . Both shells have raphe . The cells are capable of creeping movements. They can be attached to the ground by a gelatinous stick. Some species form colonies through gelatinous sheaths. The cell length ranges from 10 to 220 micrometers.

Asexual reproduction occurs through the typical dichotomy of diatoms. Sexual reproduction occurs through isogamy or anisogamy , with two gametes , rarely just one, being formed per cell . The cells then enlarge during the auxospore formation.
