Cypraeoidea is a superfamily (Latin: Superfamilia) from the gastropod class and contains several hundred species of snails. They are found worldwide mainly in the warmer seas. Their occurrence ranges from shallow water to the deep sea. Cypraeoidea was established by Rafinesque in 1815.

description

The adult species of sea snails have characteristics that clearly distinguish them from other snails. They lose their operculum after just a few weeks and the protoconch usually regresses completely. Because the windings typical of snail shells are missing, they appear mirror-symmetrical. The shape of the case varies from spherical to elongated, the size ranges from 1 cm (and below) to 10 cm (and above). The aperture (the opening of the snail shell on the underside) is long and narrow and almost always serrated. Species of this superfamily usually have a smooth and shiny shell, caused by the peculiarity of being able to lay the coat completely over the entire body.

nomenclature

The original name of this superfamily was Cyprae acea . After the rules for naming living beings were changed by the ICZN , the suffixes ‑acea or ‑aceae had to be replaced by ‑oidea in the name of many superfamilies of invertebrates. In many older works the suffixes -acea and -aceae can still be found.

Taxonomy

The systematic position of the superfamily is discussed controversially. This applies to both the external and internal systematics. Götting (1997), for example, subordinated the family Triviidae , whereas Schilder, Millard (1997) and Ponder & Lindberg (1997) classified this family in a separate superfamily Trivioidea (or Triviacea).

In their work "Classification and nomenclator of gastropod families" , Bouchet & Rocroi (2005) assigned the following two families to the superfamily Cypraeoidea:

Liltved (2000) and Fehse (2007) also confirmed belonging to these families in their systematics. With the difference that Fehse split up the family of egg snails (Ovulidae) and raised a former subfamily and a tribe to the rank of family. Thus Pediculari inae became Pediculari idae and Eocyprae ini became Eocyprae idae . With the result that "his" superfamily Cypraeoidea included four families. In addition to those by Bouchet & Rocroi, he also listed Pediculariidae and Eocypraeidae .
