Cypress Hills (" Cypress Hills ") is a hill region in the southern part of the Canadian provinces of Saskatchewan and Alberta . It contains the highest point in the Prairie Province of Saskatchewan with 1468 m . During the Wisconsin Ice Age, the cypress hills remained the northernmost point of North America that was not covered by the continental ice sheet due to their location between the Laurentide Ice Sheet and the Cordilleras Ice Sheet. The region was named after the occurrence of the Banks pine , a North American pine species that is traditionally called cyprès (" cypress ") in French .
The Cypress Hills are designated as Cypress Hills Interprovincial Park as a cross-border provincial park of the two provinces. The area was 2,005 square kilometers in extent of 396 as a Dark Sky Preserve ( dark-sky preserve , Cypress Hills Dark Sky Preserve shown). This includes the Fort Walsh National Historic Site . Also in the area is Elkwater , a lake and camping area in Alberta.
The Cypress Hills massacre took place in the Cypress Hills in 1873 , in which more than 20 Nakoda were murdered by a group of adventurers, whiskey dealers and their Métis carriers.
