The St. Cyriakus Church is the Roman Catholic parish church in Weststadt , a district of Braunschweig . The modern parish church of the parish of St. Cyriakus is located at Donaustraße 12 in the Danube district. It belongs to the deanery of Braunschweig and the diocese of Hildesheim .

history

In the post-war period, on the area of today's Weststadt, in an area previously used by the military, there was already a room for Catholic services. It mainly served former Polish forced laborers who did not return to their homeland after the end of World War II .

For the Catholic residents of the newly emerging Weststadt from 1960, who initially belonged to the parish of St. Joseph , services were held in the new Caritas kindergarten on Donaustraße from November 1964. On August 15, 1967, due to the steadily growing number of Catholics in Weststadt, which at that time had grown to around 1900, a Catholic parish vicarie was established. Like the Cyriaksring, it was named after the former Cyriakus pen and was named after St. Cyriakus . The parish vicarie was assigned to the Weststadt and the place Timmerlah . When the emergency church of the Protestant parish of Weststadt am Queckenberg became vacant in 1969, the Catholic parish moved into the barracks on December 1st.

Planning for the church began in the fall of 1969. On October 16, 1971, the foundation stone for the new church building was laid. The solemn laying of the foundation stone was carried out by Vicar General Adalbert Sendker, at this time the number of members of the parish vicarie had grown to around 2800 Catholics. The community center was handed over on June 10, 1972, and services took place there from that day. On June 23, 1973, the completed St. Cyriakus Church was consecrated by Bishop Heinrich Maria Janssen .

Due to the number of inhabitants in Weststadt, the construction of a second Catholic church was also planned, but this project was not carried out. The building plot reserved for this on Elbestraße was built on in 1996 with the St. Nikolaus children's and youth home .

In 1975 the parish vicarie, to which over 4,500 Catholics now belonged, was elevated to a parish; on June 1, 1985 the elevation to the parish followed. In 1992 there was an artistic redesign of the church based on designs by Claus Kilian . On June 23, 1998, a new pipe organ was inaugurated for the 25th anniversary of the Kirchweih , it was built by Karl Schuke Berliner Orgelbauwerkstatt GmbH . In 2008 a wooden statue of St. Cyriac was placed in the church .

architecture

St. Cyriakus was designed by the Brunswick architects Bernhard Schneemann and Günther Schniepp and is located around 80 meters above sea level .

The church is built from brick and concrete walls on a rectangular floor plan. Behind an entrance area follows the actual, square church room. He wears a pyramid roof with a cross on top.

The walls are interrupted by colored concrete glass surfaces . On the colored glass facade between the wall and the roof there are motifs from the Old and New Testaments. Inside the roof is clad with wood.

In the entrance area is the foundation stone, a boulder that was embedded in the facade of the entrance portal. On the outside there is the inscription “St. Cyriakus ”, on the inside a cross and the inscription“ 1971 ”.

The Marienkapelle is attached to the Cyriakus Church.
