The lunar crater Cyrillus is a circular depression in the floor of the Earth's moon near the visible center of the moon. It has - like many so-called ring mountains - a high ring-shaped wall ( crater rim ), which is, however, heavily eroded and is somewhat overlapped by the neighboring crater Theophilus . In the middle of the crater are the remains of some central mountains .
With Theophilus and Catharina, Cyrillus forms a characteristic group of three, which is about 2 days before the waxing crescent moon on the shadow border and therefore stands out particularly clearly. The ring mountain is named after the North African bishop Kyrill of Alexandria , († 444), the successor of Theophilus .
Its diameter is 95 kilometers, its wall height about 4–5 km. Like almost all lunar craters, it was created by the impact of a large meteorite , which must have had a diameter of about 5 km. Due to the material thrown out in the explosion, the bottom of the impact crater is slightly lower than the surroundings.
In selenographic coordinates specified, Cyril is between 12 and 15 ° south latitude and west longitude 22-26 °. The inner slope of its wall has - like Theophilus - terraces , which makes the twin craters the most beautiful lunar objects observable in a four- to eight-inch telescope in grazing light.
