The bump-head mouthbrooder ( Cyrtocara moorii , syn .: Haplochromis moorii ), also known as the Malawi humpback , is an endemic species of cichlid from the East African Malawi and Malombesee .

features

Bump-head mouthbrooders become 20 cm long, females stay a little smaller. Your body is relatively high back and strongly flattened on the sides. Sexually mature animals are bright blue in color, young fish are silvery to blue-gray with several bands and dark spots on the sides of the body. In old age, both sexes develop a forehead hump, which in exceptional cases can protrude beyond the tip of the mouth. Males are often larger and lighter in color.

Way of life

Buck-head mouthbrooders live over sandy areas in relatively shallow water at a depth of 3 to 15 meters. They are territory-forming , the males polygamous . A female lays 20 to 90 eggs, which are then taken into the mouth by the female ( mouthbrooders , mother family ). The fry hatch after 21 to 23 days.

Buck-head mouthbrooders often chase heavily burrowing species of cichlids and snatch up small crabs or other edible organisms that have been blown up.
