Cystopeltidae is a species of slugs from the subordination of the terrestrial gastropods (Stylommatophora). It is the only genus in the Cystopeltidae family . The four currently known species are native to South Australia.

features

The housing is reduced to a thin, horny plate or is missing entirely. When stretched out, the animals measure up to about 37 mm. The viscera is relatively large, strongly arched and clearly separated from the foot. It towers over on both sides of the foot and hangs down a little. Pedals and suprapedal pit do not unite at the end of the foot. A mucous pit is poorly developed, but a caudal horn may be present. The jaw consists of numerous, narrow plates. The eyes are well developed. In the hermaphroditic genital apparatus, the prostate and uterus have grown together. The spermatic duct penetrates apically into the short epiphallus. Internally, it has three to four elongated pilasters. The penis can have an extension; however, this can also be missing. The internal surface of the penis shows a few axial pilasters. The penile retractor muscle starts at the junction between the penis and the epiphallus. The spermatophore is a whitish-yellow capsule. In the female part, the free fallopian tube is relatively long and enters the short vagina through a large papilla. The spermathec is relatively large, with a short stalk, and not directly connected to the albumin gland.

Geographical distribution, occurrence and way of life

The genus Cystopelta with its four species occurs only in southern Australia ( New South Wales , Victoria , southern Queensland and Tasmania ). The animals live in forests under leaf litter, tree trunks and bark.

Systematics

The family of the Cystopeltidae is counted to the superfamily of the Punctoidea . Currently only one genus with four species is known.
