Cyttus is a genus of the Petersfischischen (Zeiformes). It occurs in the temperate seas of the southern hemisphere , in South Africa , South Australia and New Zealand at depths of 10 to 800 meters.
features
The fish have the typical, high-backed and laterally flattened shape of their relatives. They become 40 to 54 centimeters long. The first dorsal fin has eight to ten hard rays , the second 28 to 36 soft rays. In contrast to the Petersfischen (Zeidae), to which they were previously considered, they have no enlarged scales at the base of the dorsal and anal fin and along the lateral line organ .
Systematics
The genus is the only one of the family Cyttidae and the suborder Cyttoidei. There are three types:
- Cyttus australis ( Richardson , 1843)
- Cyttus novaezealandiae (Hutton, 1872)
- Cyttus traversi Hutton, 1872
