Débora Adriana Giorgi (born October 21, 1959 in Balvanera , Buenos Aires ) is an Argentine economist . Between 2008 and 2015 she was the Argentine Minister of Industry.

Career

Giorgi studied economics at the Pontifical Catholic University of Argentina . After a period in academic operations, she was one of the co-founders of the financial consulting firm Alpha Economic Studies in 1989 , for which she worked until 1999. Following the election of Fernando de la Rúa to Argentine President it was the Economy Minister José Luis Machinea to the Secretary of State appointed to the ministry. In 2001 she moved to the department headed by Industry Minister Domingo Cavallo , and after a change of government at the end of the year, she returned to Alpha Economic Studies .

In 2005, the governor of Buenos Aires, Felipe Solá , appointed her to his cabinet as Minister of Economic Affairs. After a state crisis in 2008 due to conflicts with agriculture, there were changes in the cabinet of President Cristina Fernández de Kirchner in the autumn . As a result, Giorgi took over the newly created Ministry of Industry by splitting up the economic department. During her tenure, she initiated various measures as part of a policy of import-substituting industrialization in order to promote and strengthen the Argentine domestic economy. She remained in office until the change of government in 2015, when Mauricio Macri took over the presidency. She then supported the mayor of La Matanza , Verónica Magario .
