Dören (geography)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Dören (also Döhren ) denotes a pass through a mountain range in the Low German-speaking area , especially in East Westphalia-Lippe . The origin of the term can be traced back to the Low German Dör (door). Dören thus separate two mountain ridges , which in East Westphalia are usually referred to as harrows . A typical drought is the Wallücke , for example . The Dörenschlucht between Pivitsheide VL and Augustdorf in the Teutoburg Forest also bears this name.

Smaller, damp or water-bearing notched valleys , through which no pass leads, are referred to as Siepen or Siefen in the Low German-speaking area but also in the Middle High German-speaking area - for example in the Southern Mountains. The name Siek from the East Westphalian-Lippe region, which is in turn related to this, describes a damp box valley that was created through plague and ash farming .
