There A total of 95 cars of this type were delivered to the Rheinbahn in several series, it was covering only way vehicles . From 1960, the cars were also used in a train combination with four-axle large trailer cars . After the Neuss tram was discontinued, three identical cars and three bidirectional cars were taken over from there in 1971 ; the latter were also converted into one-way cars in Düsseldorf.

As early as 1957, railcar 2310 received an additional middle section and two additional axles and thus became the prototype of the GT type 8. The middle part was in 1969 on the already known as GT 8 delivered railcars 2551 implemented.

The GT 6 were used on all Düsseldorf tram routes, and they could also be found on the long-distance routes of the K and M lines to Meerbusch . Many retired Düsseldorf wagons found a new home in the 1990s and 2000s with the Szczecin tram and the Poznan tram in Poland.
