D-ring
A D-ring is a closed semicircle made of metal or plastic, modeled on the letter D. As a rule, it is used to quickly and easily connect different objects, in exceptional cases it is also used as a decorative element on items of clothing and the like.
In addition to the direct connection with, for example, ropes and chains , D-rings are regularly used in connection with lifting devices such as snap hooks , shackles and panic hooks .
In diving , D-rings are regularly found in different numbers on jackets and are used to securely attach various pieces of equipment.
In the clothing sector, D-rings are used e.g. B. also used as a double version on belts . The same locking principle is also used on the chinstrap of motorcycle helmets ("double D-ring").
As an alternative to the D-ring, rectangular or circular rings can also be used. Circular rings have the advantage that one ring cannot slip through the other, which is the case with rectangles and semicircles and can lead to sudden opening of the clamp if the load is uneven.
D-rings for BDSM and bondage
In the field of BDSM , D-rings are often part of collars. In contrast to the use of O-rings , their use often does not serve to indicate an existing, fixed sadomasochistic relationship between top and bottom ; for example, they allow a leash to be attached to a collar.
In this context, D-rings often represent a purely functional attachment option without a symbolic meta-level (so-called “pure work collars” ).
Piercing rings for, for example, navel piercings also sometimes have the typical shape and are often based on barbells .
