As the class 727 , the Deutsche Bundesbahn ran a measuring car for the control of liner trains . The measuring car was created in 1974 by converting the Uerdingen 795 113 rail bus , which was built in 1952.

In 1970 the Federal Railroad only had facilities for punctual train control . In order to be able to safely reach speeds in the range of over 160 km / h in the planned operation, a linear train control was necessary. For the development of the type LZB 80 , however, a measuring car was required, which could be produced inexpensively by converting a Uerdingen rail bus in the Kassel repair shop . In the course of the renovation, the previous interior of the railcar was removed, the number of usable doors halved to one on each side of the vehicle, additional headlights installed and the measurement-relevant components and a computer installed.

The LZB measuring vehicle was at home in the Munich-West office during its entire period of use . Due to its low top speed and the old age of the rail bus, it no longer seemed appropriate to use it: In 2003 the measuring vehicle was retired. After the end of his period of service at Deutsche Bahn AG , the vehicle was parked in Worms and visibly deteriorated. In the meantime, the LZB measuring vehicle has been recycled.

The LZB measuring car was the only measuring car of the German Federal Railroad whose sole area of use was to control liner train control . Today this task is taken over by faster and more precise measuring sets such as the RAILab .
