Women
Christa Rothenburger from Dresden successfully defended her title from the previous year, ahead of her club mates Skadi Walter and Petra Richter from Karl-Marx-Stadt. Although the title defense was quite convincing, Rothenburger had to admit defeat on two routes. On the first day, she drew the 500 meters against Walter the shorter on her parade route and on the second day, she was defeated by Angela Stahnke from Berlin over 1000 meters. On this route, Stahnke missed a better overall position due to a fall on the first day. At the championships, the second of this year's sprint world championship and reigning all-around world champion Karin Busch was missing . After the two world championships, she concentrated exclusively on the GDR all-around championships on the following weekend.

The 19-year-old reigning all- around world champion Karin Busch secured her first GDR championship title in the all-around event with a three-distance victory in front of her club mate Andrea Schöne . Schöne had a better all-around result after the final 3000 meters, but a three-distance win was above the total number of points. Busch set a new track record over 1000 meters, which was also a world record for flatland railways.
