Comparison of the ranges of Chinese ballistic missiles

The CSS-5 is a mobile, land-based medium -range ballistic missile of the People's Republic of China . In the Chinese armed forces, the rocket is called DF-21 or Dongfeng 21 .

variants

The development of the CSS-5 mod 1 by the Changfeng engineering office for electrical engineering began in 1978. The CSS-5 is based on the submarine -based JL-1 SLBM . The first test flight took place in May 1985. The first rockets were handed over to the People's Liberation Army in 1987 .

The improved version CSS-5 mod 2 was introduced in 1996. This version has a modified warhead section as well as an improved steering system.

The CSS-5 mod 3 version is equipped with a 2,000 kg fragment warhead or cluster munitions . The range is 1,700 km.

DF-21D

DF-21D (2015)

The improved version CSS-5 mod 4 , also known as DF-21D, is a ballistic anti-ship missile ( carrier killer ), which should enable a direct attack from 1500 km away on an aircraft carrier of the United States Navy . This was demonstrated in January 2011 when the former tracking ship Yuan Wang 4 was sunk by a Dongfeng 21D missile during a target exercise, which permanently shifted the military superiority at sea, especially off the Chinese coast near Taiwan.

DF-26

DF-26 is a further development of the DF-21 and a medium-range missile longer range (IRBM) of up to 3500 km, the existence of which was only confirmed after 2010. This medium-range missile, which can also be equipped with a nuclear warhead, was also shown at the military parade in September 2015.

technology

The CSS-5 is a two-stage solid rocket. It is controlled using an inertial navigation platform . A precision ( CEP ) of 300 to 400 m (depending on the shooting distance) is achieved. The improved version CSS-5 mod 2 has a GPS steering system and achieves a hit accuracy ( CEP ) of less than 100 m.

The DF-21 rocket is housed in a launch and transport container, which is installed on a three-axle trailer . The trailer is pulled by a HY473 6 × 6 truck . The DF-21C version is installed on a 10 × 10 truck of the WS-2500 type . The system is road mobile and therefore difficult to localize. Thus, preventive control is difficult. A minimum reaction time from the drive to the missile firing of less than 40 minutes is achieved. With the mobile system, the rockets can be launched directly in the base or on the street.
