DSB Bank NV (DSB abbreviation: Dirk Scheringa Beheer) is a Dutch bank that became insolvent in 2009.

history

Dirk Scheringa, April 2009

It emerged from the Buro Frisia financial agency founded in 1975 by Dirk Scheringa and his wife Baukje Scheringa-de Vries . Dirk Scheringa was previously a police officer. In his free time, he helped people with their tax returns and gave advice on financial matters. In 1977 he decided to turn the latter into his profession, quit his job as a police officer and started a full-time job as an independent financial services provider. Business was good; the company grew through organic growth and acquisitions. In 1997, Scheringa's company had assets of € 25 million and total assets of € 300 million. On December 28, 1998 the DSB Groep (group) was founded, into which Buro Frisia was merged. At the end of the 1990s, Dirk Scheringa wanted his company, which was valued at 400 million euros, to go public. A few hours before the announced IPO in 2000, it was called off. According to Scheringa, the reason for this was a disagreement with the banks over the issue price of the shares. Scheringa remained the sole shareholder and found other ways to attract capital without relinquishing power. The two most important parts of the company were DSB Bank for savings products and DSB Direkt for credit products.

DSB Groep (group) received a banking license from the Dutch Central Bank on December 24, 2005 and the company was renamed DSB Bank NV. Unlike many other banks, the profit was mainly achieved through the commission on default insurance, which was sold together with the loans. These tying deals are banned for consumer credit in the Netherlands, but this was only discontinued in 2009 after it was widely discussed in the media.

DSB Bank operated under a large number of trading names, of which Becam, Frisia Financieringen, Lenen.nl and Postkrediet are the best known. Among other things, DSB Bank was active as a sponsor for the Dutch football club AZ Alkmaar , the DSB speed skating team and the DSB racing bike team.

International

The company was also active to a small extent under the name DSB International in Belgium (7 locations), Germany (1 location in Düsseldorf) and Slovenia .

The DSB was often criticized. In 2009 the bank was accused of selling overpriced supplementary insurance and mortgages. For this she received a number of fines from the Dutch financial authorities.

After a discussion about bankruptcy started on October 1, 2009 by the representative of the injured customers, there was a bank run . Customers withdrew more than 500 million euros in savings within 14 days.

On October 12, 2009, at the request of the Dutch Central Bank, a court ruled the “noodregeling”, comparable to the bank's bankruptcy. The judicial bankruptcy proceedings opened on October 19th. The business of DSB Bank was taken over by the Dutch central bank and the customers' accounts were frozen.

The normal deposits of DSB customers in the Netherlands were secured by the deposit fund up to 100,000 euros. 400,000 customers were affected by the bankruptcy of the bank; the payment of the amounts from the deposit guarantee had to be raised by a consortium of other credit institutions and the Dutch central bank . The deposits were estimated at around 3.25 billion euros.
