Dirk Scheringa

Dirk Scheringa (born September 21, 1950 in Grijpskerk ) is a Dutch banker, sports sponsor and art lover.

Life

Dirk Scheringa was born in a district of the municipality of Zuidhorn in the province of Groningen . He attended a school in Wolvega and became a sergeant in the Dutch Rijkspolitie . From 1976 to 1979 he was a councilor for the Christian Democratisch Appèl (CDA) in the municipality of Opmeer in the province of Noord-Holland .

Financial advice

Scheringa advises friends and acquaintances on financial issues on a part-time basis. In 1975 he founded the financial agency Buro Frisia with his wife Baukje Scheringa - de Vries . The finance agency grew rapidly through financial speculation and takeovers. In 1997, assets of EUR 300 million were already managed. At the end of December 1998, Buro Frisia became the DSB Groep .

On December 24, 2005, DSB Groep received a banking license from De Nederlandsche Bank . In October 2009, rumors of significant financial problems at DSB Bank resulted in customers withdrawing over EUR 500 million in savings within two weeks. This led to the insolvency of DSB Bank on October 12, 2009, which has since been administered by the Nederlandsche Bank (Central Bank).

Sports sponsorship

Scheringa became club chairman in 1993 during a deep crisis at AZ Alkmaar football club. After a restructuring of the football club in 1997 and 1999 came back to the Eredivisie (1st division). After supporting AZ Alkmaar annually with millions, he took over the football club in 2005.

The new construction of the DSB Stadium with 17,000 seats in August 2006 with construction costs of around 38 million euros was largely supported by Scheringa. He also sponsors the Dutch speed skating team.

Art funding

Scheringa is also an art lover and collector. In February 1997 he opened the Frisia Museum in Spanbroek, a district of Opmeer in the province of Noord-Holland. The museum has mainly works of magical realism around the painter Carel Willink (1900–1983). The Frisia Museum was renamed the Scheringa Museum voor Realisme on July 2, 2005 . Since summer 2004 a new art museum was planned, which should be built by Scheringa.

After the bankruptcy of DSB Bank on October 21, 2009, the museum also went into decline. The ABN Amro Bank had almost all the pictures confiscated overnight, which served as additional security for a mortgage loan of 32 million euros for the new museum building.

In 2008, Scheringa was ranked 97th among the richest Dutch nationals by the Quote500 with assets of 285 million euros.
