The DT-14 ( Russian ДТ-14 ) is a Soviet tractor that was manufactured from 1955 in the Kharkovsky Traktorny Zavod (ChTS or ХТЗ for short). The name stands for diesel tractor with 14 HP .

Vehicle history

Restored DT-14 in Finland (2020)

Production of the DT-14 began in 1955, with production of the predecessor ChTS-7 being discontinued in return . The main difference was that a two-cylinder gasoline engine was no longer installed, but a single-cylinder diesel engine with a higher output. In order to be able to start it even at low temperatures, the engine was started with gasoline and then switched to diesel mode. In addition, the gearbox used was changed.

In May 1957 a new version of the tractor was put into production. The DT-14A now had an electric starter, but still started with gasoline. From September of the same year a variant was built with the DT-14B that has an electric starter and is started immediately with diesel. The cylinder head has been redesigned to make the starting process easier. A decompression lever was installed, which is operated when starting and prevents the high compression typical of the diesel engine from being built up. This relieves the load on the starter. If the starter turns the engine at a sufficiently high speed, the lever is released and the engine starts.

Production of the DT-14 ceased in 1959. The successor DT-20 had already been built in parallel since 1958 and was manufactured in larger numbers until 1969.
