The type DWK 220 C were three-axle diesel locomotives with rod drive , which were designed for the middle shunting service.

Six copies of them were built from 1938 to 1941 by Deutsche Werke in Kiel (DWK) and used by various private railways and military facilities in Germany.

The locomotives were the smaller version of the DWK 360 C and were in use until the late 1970s. No copy has survived.

development

At the same time as the DWK D350 , the DWK developed a weaker machine which, according to the company's type range, expressed the power in horsepower and the wheel alignment. This locomotive had the dummy shaft within the axle group and had a Endführerstand.

The prototype was tested on the Kiel port railway and transferred to the navy in 1939 ; in 1940 and 1941 five further series machines were manufactured, four of which were given to the navy and one to the oil refinery in Ingolstadt from Shell AG .

technology

The DWK 220 C is a shunting locomotive with a front end and a driver's cab behind it. It shows similarities to the DWK 360 C from the same manufacturer with smaller dimensions. The locomotives were only made for the 1,435 mm gauge .

The locomotive was powered by a six-cylinder four-stroke diesel engine that delivered 220 hp (160 kW) at 1000 rpm. The power transmission as well as the control of the shift and reversing gears was done mechanically. On the locomotive, the jackshaft was a little in front of the driver's cab between the 2nd and 3rd drive axles, which in turn transmitted the power to the drive wheels via drive and coupling rods .

commitment

Navy

The locomotives of the Kriegsmarine were given the designation V 22 015-019 of the Deutsche Reichsbahn immediately after the Second World War . In 1949 they left the DR portfolio and were sold to various private operators. The locomotives were retired by the late 1970s.

Shell AG / BE 10

The locomotive with the DWK road number 683 was sold to Shell AG in 1941 and stayed there until 1970. In August 1970, it was added to the Bentheim Railway's portfolio as D 10 and was supposed to take on shunting tasks, especially in the Nordhorn area . The locomotive could not convince the BE, as the mechanical transmission was particularly prone to failure and caused several visits to the workshop. The locomotive was parked by November 1971 at the latest. It was sold to the Peter Temming paper mill in Glückstadt in 1972 . The locomotive stayed here until 1980, when it was sold to a scrap dealer and scrapped in 1982.
