DaVita Inc. is a global US provider of dialysis services for patients with chronic and acute kidney failure .
Company history
The company was founded in 1994 as Total Renal Care (TRC). CEO was Victor Chaltiel . Chaltiel resigned in July 1999 after two disappointing quarterly reports and a number of class action suits , including due to inadequate financial statement disclosures . The company was close to bankruptcy and market capitalization was under $ 200 million. In October 1999, Harvard graduate Kent Thiry became the new CEO. He fundamentally restructured the company and changed the name to DaVita . Thiry sometimes used unusual methods. So he and other members of the upper management disguised as The Three Musketeers with call and response from All for one, one for all (“One for all, all for one”) appeared in front of the company's employees. The company grew continuously in the following years and today, as of July 2017, has a market capitalization of around 11 billion euros.
Between 2012 and 2015, DaVita paid nearly $ 1 billion in three lawsuits for fraud against the state Medicare system. The payments were made without admission of guilt ( does not admit any wrongdoing ) by the company.
DaVita operates 2,350 outpatient dialysis centers in the United States, serving approximately 188,000 patients. Outside the United States, the company operates 154 outpatient dialysis centers in 11 countries. DaVita's biggest competitor is Fresenius Medical Care (FMC).
