The Dabbahu Volcano (also Boina, Boyna or Moina) is a stratovolcano in the Danakil desert in Ethiopia , 311 km west of the port city of Djibouti . It has a height of about 1442 m and is one of the active volcanoes in the country.
General information
The Dabbahu lies on the rift zone of the East African Rift Valley , a continental seam that runs through East Africa for a length of 6000 kilometers to Mozambique . The volcano rises above the bottom of a dry sea that was formed when the Danakil Block was raised by plate tectonics , isolating the Afar Triangle from the Red Sea .
Eruptions
The first known eruption occurred in September 2005. A crack on the northeast flank ejected ash. 6000 people from neighboring villages were evacuated. Further eruptions took place in August 2006 and from August 21, 2007.
