The Dachau house boards are both jewelry and protection symbols. They were to be found on the facades of many farms and craftsmen's houses in the Dachau region , especially in the 19th century .

Description and occurrence

The Solnhof limestone panels show religious motifs that were carved and painted as a bas-relief in the stone slabs. These plates are 25 by 25 centimeters to 50 by 50 centimeters in size. You can still see them on house facades in the Dachau district today. This rural folk art can only be found in the Dachau district and the surrounding area.

"Some who wander contemplatively through the courtyards may have noticed the small sculptures in Solnhofen limestone because of their peculiar shape and setting, which fit themselves into the simple, almost sparse practicality of the rural house", it says in the yearbook of the Bavarian Homeland Federation from 1938.

Around 1930 over 300 house panels are said to have existed. Many Dachau house signs are on the Bavarian list of monuments as small monuments .
