Dafydd Elis Elis-Thomas, Baron Elis-Thomas , PC , (born October 18, 1946 ) is a Welsh politician and former Presiding Officer of the National Assembly for Wales from 1999 to 2011. He sits in the House of Lords and is a former party leader of Plaid Cymru and since 2004 member of the Privy Council .

Personal

Thomas grew up in Ceredigion and Llanrwst . In 1970 he married Elen Williams, with whom he has three sons. They were later divorced, and from 1980 to 1992 his partner was Marjorie Thompson , the chair of the peace movement organization Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament . In 1993 he married Mair Parry Jones, the interpreter director of the National Assembly. He lives in Llandaff , Cardiff and Betws-y-Coed .

Professional career

From 1994 to 1999 he was Chairman of the Welsh Language Board and is a former member of the Arts Council of Wales and the British Film Institute . He was also director and deputy director of Cynefin Environmental Ltd. from 1992 to 1999. A former lecturer, he has also been President of Bangor University since 2000 and is a member of the leadership of the Church in Wales .

Political career

British Parliament

From 1974 to 1983 he was a Member of the House of Commons for the constituency of Meirionnydd Westmister and from 1983 for the constituency of Meirionnydd Nant Conwy. After it had been announced in 1992 that he should be raised to a life peer , he changed his family name by deed poll from "Thomas" to "Elis-Thomas" so that he could accept the title of Baron Elis-Thomas . On September 18, 1992, he was raised accordingly as Baron Elis-Thomas , of Nant Conwy in the County of Gwynedd, to the Life Peer and has been a member of the House of Lords since then.

In 2012, Lord Elis-Thomas was criticized by the Fix Parliament group as the most expensive member of the House of Lords for voting in a single vote in 2011 but accounting for £ 15,488.70 in expenses.

National Assembly for Wales

Lord Elis-Thomas is also a Member of the National Assembly for Wales , where he sat for the Meirionnydd Nant Conwy from 1999 to 2007 and then represented the Dwyfor Meirionnydd . He was also the Presiding Officer of the National Assembly for Wales from 1999 to 2011.

"Mrs. Windsor "incident

In December 2004, Lord Elis-Thomas requested Leanne Wood to leave the Chamber for simply referring to the Queen as "Mrs. Windsor" during a debate without her title. Leanne Wood was the first member of the Chamber to leave the Chamber for these reasons. In 2012, Leanne Wood prevailed over Elis-Thomas in the election for party chairman.
