Dai Jin ( Chinese  戴 進 , Pinyin dài jìn , W.-G. Tai Chin ; * 1388 in Hangzhou , Zhejiang Province ; † 1462 ibid) was a Chinese painter of the Ming Dynasty .

Life

Dài was already involved in painting as a boy, but initially took up the profession of carpenter . Later he worked at the court of Emperor Xuanzong , where as a professional painter he was met with the contempt of civil servants. Due to intrigues, Dài had to withdraw to his homeland near Hangzhou after a few years. There he hoped to earn his living as a freelance painter, but died completely impoverished in 1462.

Dài Jìn is considered to be the founder of the Zhe School (named after his home province of Zhejiang), which continued the tradition of academy painting of the southern Song Dynasty . Ma Yuan and Xia Kuai were among his role models . His landscapes are characterized by a lyrical, atmospheric style that is committed to reproducing momentary moods. The high-contrast and emphatically graphic use of texture drawings, for example on rock, tree or leafy areas, is also characteristic.

Dài to Jin's most important works include Late return from a spring outing , to a stream latching hermit , homecoming end boat in the rain storm or search for paradise . Fishing boats on rivers were also a favorite motif.
