Daisy Cutter (subtitle La cortadora de margaritas , German about "The Daisy Picker") is a Spanish computer-animated short film by Enrique García and Rubén Salazar from 2010 .

action

A classroom in Iraq : on the teacher's desk there is a daisy in a vase that is slowly losing its petals. The ten-year-old girl Zaira is drawing a daisy in her workbook. When the pause signal sounds, she sadly packs her things, including a picture of a boy. On the way home she thinks she sees the boy from the photo, but it is another child who points a toy gun at her.

Zaira picks daisies and lays them on the grave of the boy whose photo she is carrying with her. Then she walks through a park. Planes fly overhead and Zaira starts to run, obviously delighted. A bomb hits her behind her, the suction lets daisies pass her by and Zaira seems happy. People burn around her, a woman weeps for her dead child, and suddenly the ball of fire reaches the girl. Zaira dies and finds herself in heaven as a ghost with the boy. Both start dancing and are soon joined by other children.

production

The idea for Daisy Cutter came up in 2008, production started in January 2009 and ended in August 2010. The soundtrack comes from Aritz Villodas and was recorded by the Aloz Quartet. Daisy Cutter has screened at numerous festivals, including the Sundance Film Festival , the Hollywood Film Festival and the 58th Festival Internacional de Cine de Donostia-San Sebastián . The Austrian premiere took place in August 2011 at the Alpinale short film festival in Nenzing .

The title Daisy Cutter is ambiguous. The film initially alludes to the girl picking the daisies. However, BLU-82B bombs , which were used to de-green the jungle during the Vietnam War , were also colloquially referred to as “daisy cutters” . The BLU-828 was later used as part of Operation Desert Storm in the Second Gulf War - the film credits the psychological effects of the bomb as the main reason for the use in Iraq.

Awards

Daisy Cutter was awarded the Golden Ear at the Pontino Short Film Festival .
