Dalrymple sign

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Dalrymple's sign is a Lidveränderung in thyroid eye disease . It is named after the English ophthalmologist John Dalrymple (1803-1852).

In addition to hyperthyroidism, endocrine orbitopathy is part of the clinical picture of Graves' disease , and very rarely also in chronic immune thyroiditis ( Hashimoto's thyroiditis ). This leads to inflammatory infiltration of the fatty tissue of the eye socket ( orbit ), the eye muscles and eyelids and, as a result, massive swelling, which forces the eyeball out of the orbit ( exophthalmos ).

The Dalrymple symbol describes the fact that the white sclera is also visible above the edge of the cornea (limbus corneae) due to an excessively widened eyelid gap . Different characteristics can be measured and express the distance between the limbus and the edge of the lid in mm.

Other clinical signs and lid changes in endocrine orbitopathy are the Graefe sign , the Gifford sign , the Stellwag sign , the Kocher sign and the Möbius sign .
