Daman is one of the three districts of the Indian Union Territory of Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu . It has about 114,000 inhabitants (2001 census) on 72 km². The seat of the district administration is the place Daman .

Daman is located on the west coast of India on the Arabian Sea . It is completely surrounded by the Valsad district of Gujarat state .

The first Portuguese landed in Daman in 1523. They had been trying to establish themselves in the area since the 1530s. The city of Daman was occupied by the Portuguese in 1559 and called Damão . In 1588, the entire area was incorporated into Portuguese India . In 1614 they conquered the Damão Pequeno area on the right bank of the Daman Ganga River . Daman remained a Portuguese colony until the military appropriation by India on December 19, 1961 .

The main line of business is fishing.
