Damond Micheal Jiniya (* 16th December 1974 in Palm Springs , California ) is an American metal - singer . He became known from 2001 through his work with the band Savatage .

childhood

He was born in Palm Springs, California on December 16, 1974 and was raised by his mother, a traveling country and western entertainer. At the age of two, he began adding to his mother's shows. By the age of nine he had lived in 48 of the United States . His sister and grandmother were also artists.

Diet of Worms

Since 1996 Jiniya sang in the band Diet of Worms . The guitarist was Juan "Punchy" Gonzalez. In the same year a demo of the same name was released. In 1998 drummer Steven "Divine" Wright joined the band, which they left in 2003. After playing their last gig in 2003, the band broke up in 2004 due to personal differences.

Jiniya later also appeared as a backing vocalist for the band Lover of Sin, in which Juan "Punchy" Gonzalez plays guitar.

Savatage

After Zachary Stevens left the band the day before the planned recording of the album Poets and Madmen , Jon Oliva recorded all the vocal lines himself. However, since he did not want to sing alone on the tour, Damond Jiniya was hired for this. The tour kicked off April 19, 2001 at Jaxx Nightclub, Springfield , Virginia . It led through the USA , Scotland , Italy , Spain , Germany , Greece , the Netherlands , Brazil , Sweden , Norway , Denmark , Switzerland , Austria , Belgium , France , Japan and Hungary . The last gig took place on August 5th, 2002 on the Sziget near Budapest . The tour also went through Wacken Open Air and Bang Your Head . Although Jon Oliva spoke several times during the tour that Damond Jiniya was a permanent member of the band and that there should be a live album with him, there were no further concerts. A planned studio album never appeared either. Back in 2004, Stevens fueled rumors that Jiniya would not return to the band. He said a three-singer solution (Jiniya / Stevens / Oliva) was impossible and for him Jiniya was out of the band. The band announced their breakup in 2007.

In June 2011, Damond Jiniya spoke publicly about his time with Savatage. He ruled out further activities and said that the end of the band was a relief for the fans, as the "train" drove towards "oblivion". He described Savatage as a way to promote the Trans-Siberian Orchestra and complained about never being clear about the band's status.

other projects

Damond Jiniya applied for the post at INXS , but was turned down because he was too "scary".

He is currently on the road with the band Herman / Nebula .

Private

In 2008, Jiniya married. He later reported becoming addicted to alcohol and drugs during his time at Savatage due to depression. However, he has now overcome this. He now works as a vocal coach.
