Dan Gillerman

Dan Gillerman ( Hebrew דן גילרמן; *  1944 in Palestine ) was the 13th permanent representative of Israel to the United Nations from January 1, 2003 to the end of July 2008 .

He studied at the University of Tel Aviv and the Hebrew University of Jerusalem , worked as CEO of several Israeli companies, as a board member of the First International Bank of Israel, was a director of Bank Leumi and the Central Bank of Israel.

Gillerman stood up for the economic liberalization of Israel and the free market economy . With regard to the economic aspects of the peace process, he tried to promote further economic cooperation in the region through talks with Arab and Palestinian leaders.

On June 14, 2005, he was elected to the position of Vice President of the 60th General Assembly of the United Nations and was the second Israeli to hold this post after UN envoy Abba Eban in 1952 . The Israeli candidacy was mainly supported by Western European countries. The Bar Ilan University awarded him an honorary doctorate in 2007 .

Gillerman is married with two children, a son and a daughter.
