Daniel Chonghan Hong

Daniel Chonghan Hong (born March 3, 1956 in Seoul , † July 6, 2002 ) was a South Korean theoretical physicist .

Life

Hong studied physics at Seoul National University . In 1979 he received his bachelor's degree and in 1981 his master's degree. He then began a doctorate at Boston University in the US state of Maine , which he obtained in 1985 with a Ph.D. completed.

He then accepted a postdoctoral research position at the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB), and later at Emory University . In 1988 he became an assistant professor in the physics department at Lehigh University in Bethlehem , Pennsylvania . In 1994 he was promoted to associate professor , and finally to full professorship in 2000.

His main area of ​​research was the dynamics of granular media. a. about granular flow, diffusion models , viscosity behavior and percolation .

Prof. Hong became temporarily popular among laypeople through a study of the physics of popcorn making . He was also active as a popular science writer, writing on a wide range of topics from physics and other natural sciences to philosophical subjects and religion.

Hong was editor of the AKPA newsletter between 1995 and 2000 and was part of the editorial community of KASTN, the Korean American Science and Technology News.

Daniel Chonghan Hong died of a heart attack at the age of 46, leaving behind a wife, son and two daughters.
