Daniel Engelbrecht (born November 5, 1990 in Cologne ) is a former German soccer player .

Career

Engelbrecht grew up without his Canadian - Sri Lankan father, who left his mother when she was seven months pregnant. After graduating from high school, he trained as an office clerk.

In his youth he played soccer for SV Grün-Weiß Brauweiler , SC Köln Weiler-Volkhoven and Bedburger BV . He then moved to the A-Juniors Bundesliga at Bayer 04 Leverkusen . In 2009 he moved to the second team of Alemannia Aachen and scored 48 goals in 73 games in three seasons in the NRW League . He was then signed by VfL Bochum at the beginning of the 2012/13 season to play in its reserve team for the time being. On January 2, 2013, he was loaned to the Stuttgarter Kickers until the end of the season in order to collect match practice in the 3rd soccer league . After Engelbrecht had managed to stay up with the Kickers and the loan deal was over, he returned to Bochum. In the professional team of the club, he completed a few test matches in the preparation for the season; A few days before the start of the season, he finally switched to the Stuttgarter Kickers and signed a contract that ran until 2016.

On July 20, 2013, in his second season play against Rot-Weiß Erfurt , Engelbrecht collapsed on the field after a cardiac arrest and had to be reanimated. Subsequently, an inflammation of the myocardium and chronic cardiac arrhythmias were diagnosed, which resulted in four operations in which Engelbrecht, among other things, inserted a defibrillator into the chest. On November 15, 2014, he made his comeback as the first professional footballer in Germany to actively participate in competitive sports with a defibrillator. On December 6, 2014, he scored his first competitive goal after his comeback with the winning goal in the match against SV Wehen Wiesbaden in stoppage time.

On January 10, 2016, his contract with the Stuttgarter Kickers was terminated. He moved back to his old place of work Alemannia Aachen. His engagement in Aachen only lasted until June 2016. In June 2016 he joined the regional league team TSV Steinbach .

During the summer break of 2017, he signed a contract with the regional division Rot-Weiss Essen . But shortly after his move, Engelbrecht had heart problems again and, on the advice of his doctors, decided in October 2017 to put his active career on hold for the time being in order to devote himself to a career as a coach.
