Daniel Herschkowitz ( Hebrew דניאל הרשקוביץ, Born January 2, 1953 in Haifa ) is an Israeli politician , mathematician and rabbi. He works as a mathematics professor at the Technion and as a rabbi in the Ahuza district in Haifa.

Life

Herschkowitz received his Bachelor of Science (B. Sc.) And Master of Science (M.Sc.) in 1976 as well as his Doctor of Science, all at the Technion - Israel Institute of Technology . He studied at the Merkas HaRaw Kook in Jerusalem, one of the most respected religious schools in Israel, founded by Abraham Isaak Kook . He received his semicha in 1995 from the rabbis She'ar Yashuv Cohen , Shlomo Chelouche and Nehemyah Roth, and an additional semicha as “Rabbi of the City” from the Chief Rabbinate of Israel (2001).

He has published over 80 mathematical articles in scientific journals . He was President of the International Linear Algebra Society (2002-2008), and Professor of Mathematics at the University of Wisconsin-Madison . In 1982 he received the Landau Research Prize in Mathematics and in 1990 the New England Academic Award for Excellence in Research ; In 1990 the Technion's Award for Excellence in Teaching and in 199, the Henri Gutwirth Award for Promotion of Research .

In 2009 he became a member of the Knesset as chairman of HaBajit haJehudi and Minister of Science and Technology under the Netanyahu government. He did not take part in the 2013 elections.
