Daniel Johnson Morrell (born August 8, 1821 in North Berwick , York County , Maine , †  August 20, 1885 in Johnstown , Pennsylvania ) was an American politician . Between 1867 and 1871 he represented the state of Pennsylvania in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Daniel Morrell attended public schools in his home country. In 1836 he moved to Philadelphia where he worked as a bank clerk and in commerce. Since 1855 he lived in Johnstown. He became general manager of Cambria Iron Co. Between 1860 and 1884 he was president of the local water and gas utilities. From 1863 to 1884 he also served as President of the First National Bank of Johnstown . He was also chairman of the local city council for a long time. Politically, he was a member of the Republican Party .

In the congressional election of 1866 Morrell was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the 17th  constituency of Pennsylvania , where he succeeded Abraham Andrews Barker on March 4, 1867 . After being re-elected, he was able to complete two terms in Congress until March 3, 1871 . During this time he was chairman of the craft committee. By 1869, the work of Congress was weighed down by tension between Republicans and President Andrew Johnson , which culminated in a narrowly unsuccessful impeachment trial. In 1868 and 1870 the 14th and 15th amendments to the Constitution were ratified.

In the elections of 1870 Daniel Morrell was not confirmed. In 1878 he was commissioner for the world exhibition in Paris . Otherwise, he resumed his previous activities. He also became a member of the South Fork Fishing and Hunting Club . He repeatedly pointed out the weaknesses of the South Fork Dam , without success . He even offered to renovate Lake Conemaugh with his own funds. That was also rejected. Four years after Morrell's death, the dam broke on May 31, 1889, causing a regional disaster. He died on August 20, 1885 in Johnstown, where he was also buried.
