Daniel Mainwaring (born February 27, 1902 in Oakland , † January 31, 1977 in Los Angeles ) was an American writer and screenwriter .

life and career

Mainwaring initially worked as a journalist before establishing himself as a writer. Except for his debut novel One Against the Earth , he published all literary works under the pseudonym Geoffrey Homes. Build My Gallows High is considered his best work . Its filming, Golden Poison , directed by Jacques Tourneur , based on a script written by Mainwaring himself, is one of the most important representatives of film noir .

Other well-known directors for whom Mainwaring worked as a screenwriter were Joseph Losey and Don Siegel . For Siegel he wrote the screenplay for The Demonic (based on a novel by Jack Finney ), which is now considered a classic of science fiction films .

Mainwaring represented an openly left-liberal stance and at least once made his name available to an author who was not allowed to be named as the author because of his inclusion in the " black list " of the committee for un-American activities . In contrast, the information, which can be traced back to an interview with Joseph Losey, among other things, that Mainwaring itself was on the "black list" was described by Mainwaring's widow as incorrect. Mainwaring appeared in the 1950s by name in the titles of films based on his scripts; the first author of the "Black List", which was again officially called in a film leader, was Dalton Trumbo in the 1960 resulting exodus .

In the last few years of his professional life, Mainwaring wrote scripts for television series.
